How to get to the Florence Duomo at a glance
Santa Maria Novella is the main station, and it lies west of the Duomo. A practical route on the map runs via Piazza dell'Unità Italiana, Via Panzani and Via de' Cerretani to the Piazza del Duomo. Exact distance and walking time depend on where you leave the platform and how many bags you carry, so check the walk on your own map before you go.
From the airport at Peretola, the T2 tram is the simple choice. By car you meet a camera-controlled traffic zone (ZTL), which is why most visitors park outside and switch to the tram. If you plan to climb the dome on the day you arrive, look at the Duomo tickets and passes first, because the dome needs a fixed time slot.

From the airport to the Duomo by T2 tram
Florence Airport at Peretola has a tram stop about 2 minutes on foot from the terminal.
The T2 line runs from the airport to San Marco-Università and passes the main station area on the way. Since 25 January 2025 the line continues beyond Piazza dell'Unità Italiana to Piazza San Marco. The ride from the airport into the centre takes about 20 minutes. That is the tram ride only, not the whole trip from your gate to the Piazza del Duomo.
| Direction | First tram | Last tram, Sunday to Thursday | Last tram, Friday and Saturday |
|---|---|---|---|
| From the airport | 05:00 | 23:58 | 01:15 |
| From San Marco | 05:00 | 00:30 | 02:00 |
The last trams differ by direction, so do not plan a late return from the city on the airport timetable. For most visitors without much luggage, the tram into the centre and a short walk is the easiest way to arrive.
Tram and bus tickets in 2026
The fare tables currently in use do not agree, so check before you pay.
Single ticket
A standard city ticket costs €2 from 1 August 2026, or €1.70 where the previous fare is still shown. Look at the price on the ticket machine or in the app and pay what it shows. A ten-trip card costs €18.20 or €18.
How long it is valid
A ticket is valid for 90 minutes in Florence. Validate a paper ticket when you board. With contactless payment, one ticket is charged per card, so a group should not tap one card for everyone.
Children
Children under 11 travel free. Confirm this before you rely on it with a family.
From Pisa to Florence
A bus runs between Pisa and Florence every day of the year and takes about 60 minutes, depending on traffic. In daytime it arrives at Guidoni, where you change to the T2 tram. It does not stop at the main station. Fares start at €14.99 in the day and €21.99 at night, and children aged 2 to 11 pay €8.99. The tram ticket for the last stretch is not included.
A regional train from Pisa Centrale to Santa Maria Novella is the other option. Check the current timetable and fare on the day, because they change.

By car: ZTL and parking
Driving into the centre is rarely worth it.
The traffic zone
Large parts of the centre are watched by cameras. The general hours are Monday to Friday 07:30 to 20:00 and Saturday 07:30 to 16:00. On Sundays and holidays the zone is normally not active.
Evenings and nights
Extra night windows exist, and they differ by sector. In some sectors Friday restrictions start at 20:00 and Saturday ones at 16:00 and run through the night. Do not assume you can enter before 23:00 on a Friday or Saturday.
Other bans
Pedestrian zones and bus lanes are separate prohibitions. A navigation app may not show them all.
Hotel inside the zone
Ask the hotel or garage to report your licence plate, and check which streets you may use. A hotel booking alone is not permission to drive on every street.
Park and ride
You can leave the car outside and switch to the tram: Villa Costanza on the T1 line and Guidoni on the T2 line. Garages inside the city are commercial, and current hourly rates should be checked before you park.
Environmental controls
Further environmental checks have applied since 1 July 2025, in addition to the ZTL of the old town, and more restrictions are announced from 1 December 2026. This does not mean a general entry fee for tourists, but read the current rules for your vehicle.
When you arrive at the Piazza del Duomo
Three addresses are worth knowing. The ticket office is at Piazza San Giovanni 7 and is open Monday to Saturday from 08:00 to 19:15 and Sunday from 10:15 to 17:45. The museum entrance is at Piazza del Duomo 9. The dome is entered at the Porta della Mandorla on the north side.
If you come straight from the train with a suitcase, use the left-luggage depot at Piazza Duomo 38/r, open daily from 07:30 to 20:15. Medium and large bags, backpacks and suitcases must be left before you enter. Check the opening hours for the days you plan to visit.
