Hotels near the Florence Duomo: four areas to choose from

The Duomo is a central point on the map, north of the Arno. If you sleep close to the Piazza del Duomo, you save the trip to the sights, but the real walk depends on the exact address. This page sorts the options by area. It names no hotels and quotes no room prices, because those change by date and are best checked when you book.

Think about what you plan to do first. If the dome is the reason for your trip, a short walk before an early slot helps, and the Duomo passes show which time slots you need. Check the arrival options too, since the station is west of the Duomo.

The areas compared

A guide to where each one lies. Walking times differ for every address.

AreaWhere it liesWhat it suitsKeep in mind
Centro storicoAround the Piazza del Duomo, north of the ArnoThe shortest trip to the dome, bell tower and museumInside the ZTL, so car access needs a check
San LorenzoNorth-west of the Duomo, around the market and the basilicaA search area between the Duomo and the direction of the stationWalking times differ by hotel
Santa CroceEast and south-east of the Duomo in the historic centreA separate city quarter with its own characterNot the same as right on the Piazza del Duomo
OltrarnoSouth of the ArnoAn alternative side of the city, with craft workshops and Santo SpiritoYou cross the river to reach the Duomo

For most first-time visitors who mainly want the Duomo and the old centre, the Centro storico or San Lorenzo is the sensible start. Santa Croce and Oltrarno suit people who prefer a quarter with its own streets and do not mind a walk.

Our take: staying nearby makes an early bell tower slot easy to reach.

Each area in more detail

What to expect from the map.

Centro storico

This is the heart of the old city. A room here means you walk to the cathedral, the baptistery in front of it and the museum at Piazza del Duomo 9. It does not by itself say whether the street is quiet or cheap, so look at the exact address. If you arrive by car, the ZTL applies to much of this area.

San Lorenzo

The area around the basilica and the market lies north-west of the Duomo. The cast-iron hall of the Mercato Centrale, built to a design by Giuseppe Mengoni, opened in 1874. As a place to sleep it sits between the Duomo and the way to the station.

Santa Croce

This quarter lies east and south-east of the Duomo area and is its own search area. Count on a walk to the Piazza del Duomo rather than a few steps, and check the distance for the hotel you like.

Oltrarno

South of the Arno, the district is known for crafts and for the Santo Spirito neighbourhood. It is an alternative to the old centre, not a way to be closer to the Duomo. For the Ponte Vecchio, the Pitti Palace and the quarter itself, see the Oltrarno guide and the Ponte Vecchio stay guide.

Tourist tax and city rules in 2026

The city charges a tourist tax per person and night. The rates for 2025 are €3.50 for 1-star hotels, €4.50 for 2 stars, €6 for 3 stars, €7 for 4 stars and €8 for 5 stars. Bed and breakfasts, guest rooms, holiday apartments and tourist rentals pay €6. The tax applies to a maximum of 7 consecutive nights, and children under 12 are exempt.

These are the latest rates, and a new regulation is due from 1 November 2026. Ask your accommodation for the amount that applies to your dates.

On 24 March 2026 the city announced a ban on key boxes, golf carts in the historic centre and loudspeakers for guided tours. If you book an apartment, ask the host how check-in works and where to collect the keys.

Practical tips for any area

Small things that save time.

Driving to your hotel

Ask the hotel or garage to report your licence plate to the traffic zone, and which streets you may use. A booking does not by itself allow you to drive on every street.

Between check-out and your visit

The left-luggage depot at Piazza Duomo 38/r is open daily from 07:30 to 20:15. Medium and large bags must be left before you enter the monuments.

Early dome slot

The dome opens at 08:15 on Monday to Saturday. Entry is at the Porta della Mandorla on the north side, so check the walk from your hotel before you book the slot.

For the David and the Accademia Gallery, the area is covered in the guide to staying near the Accademia.
